Specifying the Material of Process Tanks

November 19, 2019

When specifying process tanks, there are some simple criteria to take note of such as capacity, dimension, orientation, and portability. The capacity of the tank refers to its internal volume that is available for storing the processing medium while its dimensions are usually measured by diameter and length in feet.

When it comes to orientation, process tanks can either be horizontal or vertical. The vertical tank stands and can be accessed from the bottom. On the other hand, horizontal tanks are typically mounted on saddles and can be accessed either through the top or bottom of the tank.

Process tanks can be installed underground or above ground, depending on their specific construction type. There are also portable units that can be relocated from one place to another thanks to their built-in wheels, or they can be transported in carts or vehicles.

These are all the most basic criteria to specify for process tanks. However, to take things one step further, you can specify the material of the tank as well.

This requires a lot more knowledge of the process as well as of the properties of various materials.

Steel: the type of steel used in making a process tank is usually rolled sheet. Since it is a ferrous metal, steel offers a wide variety of physical properties. Stainless steel is perfect for processing materials where corrosion is an issue. Galvanised steel is another option, as it undergoes surface treatment with zinc as its protective layer.

FRP or fiberglass reinforced polyester: this material can be used to create virtually any shape for process tanks prior to curing. It consists of a series of long glass fibers that are mixed in a resin. After being cured, the fiberglass becomes lightweight yet extremely strong, and is able to resist corrosion.

Titanium: this is an extremely strong material that is opted for when high temperatures and stresses are expected. You can combine other special coatings and linings with this material to give is corrosion resistance and other physical properties needed for your operations.
